Bearly Cake is an accidental bakery. Joseph, Joel and Phillip are the creative engineers driving Bearly Cake. We are not implying that there was no thought put into everything that makes us who we are.
In October of 2008, Joseph’s niece, Alexis, was having her first birthday. We asked if we could make her cake. We made a half sheet cake and a 6” round tier decorated to match the invitations. All the decorations were piped and everyone who saw it fell in love with it.
Fast forward to May of 2009, Joseph’s Sister-in-law, Wynter, asked us to make her Son, Austin, a birthday cake. She had a Carnival theme planned for the occasion to be held in June.
With the basics mapped out, we began making a grand showpiece. Wynter’s birthday was to be celebrated the night before so we planned a small Princess Castle for her as a surprise. Wynter called a few days prior to the party and asked if we would make a small cake for her neighbor’s son who was also celebrating a birthday the same weekend. We agreed to make it as the family was not financially able to order a cake. We began making a Medieval Castle for him. WHEW! 3 cakes in one weekend and we were not even thinking about being in business.
Wynter’s party was being held at Shakey’s Pizza in Palmdale, California. We arrived with her cake and went in. Immediately, we were surrounded by people asking where we got the cake. We explained that we made it and people started asking for our Business cards. We didn’t have any. We were not in business! The attention was overwhelming and flattering. We left later in the evening. We were still giddy, talking about what had just occurred. We got home and immediately ordered cards with our contact info on them.
The next day, We went to the party and delivered the Carnival cake including the Ferris Wheel and Merry-go-round and the Medieval Castle. Everyone was floored. Nobody wanted to cut the cakes. We again were overwhelmed. We talked to everyone at the party and were encouraged to pursue opening a business making cakes.
Wynter and Shawn (Joseph’s brother) were elated with what we had created. We must have talked for hours about opening a business and what it could mean to our families. We left late that night but continued to talk about turning this accidental business into a real business. This is when we believe Bearly Cake was officially no longer just an idea.
Joel came up with the name. He is good with things like that. We all agreed, Bearly Cake was catchy. Joseph and Joel had taken a Wilton decorating class back in Jacksonville, Florida for fun in 2002. We had explored so many ideas over the years of how to open a business that was not a gimmick. We never even thought about decorating cakes as a business.
Phillip is MR. Fondant! He pushed us into working with it. He purchased some from Michael’s and used it to cover a Thomas the tank engine cake. While the cake was very charming, the fondant was horrible. The flavor was not good and it was difficult to work with. He has researched recipes and settled on a marshmallow recipe that he thought would be appropriate for us. He has modified the recipe over time and made it his own. We are very proud of his efforts and extremely pleased with our fondant. He has really worked hard to be familiar with that particular medium. He is also the person that comes up with different ideas for flavor combinations. He is also quite skilled in the creative process and comes up with some truly wonderful designs.
Joseph assists with planning, decorating and pricing our cakes. He seems to have the most patience with such things as applying frostings. He also is quite good at making Gum Paste Flowers.
Joel is our Baker. He also does a lot of the planning of what gets done and when. He also handles most of the creative process. Chances are, if you have received an email, it was him that sent it.
We hope you enjoy our products! We can accidentally create one for you soon..
